The New York City Ballet's trio of works by George Balanchine, Balanchine I, begins September 20, launching the company's 2022-23 season at Lincoln Center. The trio of pieces includes Divertimento No. 15, Scotch Symphony, and La Sonnambula.
The previously announced season features world premieres by Tony-winning NYCB Resident Choreographer and Artistic Advisor Justin Peck (Carousel, West Side Story) and Tony winner Christopher Wheeldon (An American in Paris, MJ the Musical). Presenting 48 ballets by 10 choreographers and including a performance of Jerome Robbins' West Side Story Suite, the New York City Ballet's season will run through May 28, 2023.
In January 2023, Peck's new work, choreographed to the music of Aaron Copland, will make its world premiere. The piece is his first full-length original work for NYCB, and his 23rd for the company. Following in May, Wheeldon's new ballet and Peck's The Times Are Racing will make world premieres at NYCB's Spring Gala. Both are presenting their 23rd works for the company.
“The programming for New York City Ballet’s 2022-2023 season contains a rich assortment of the company’s heritage repertory of landmark works, as well as exciting premieres,” said NYCB Associate Artistic Director Wendy Whelan in an earlier statement. “Justin Peck will be making his first-ever full-evening work, an exploration of the music of Aaron Copland featuring set designs by renowned visual artist Jeffrey Gibson.”
