New musical Lempicka, playing a pre-Broadway run at La Jolla Playhouse June 14–July 24, has released its first single, "Woman Is." Eden Espinosa, who stars in the production as Tamara de Lempicka, performs the song, which features lyrics by Carson Kreitzer, music by Matt Gould, and orchestrations by Cian McCarthy. Matt Stine produced the single, which was recorded at Berklee at PowerStation and mixed by Isaiah Abolin, and mastered by Oscar Zambrano for Zampol Productions. The original cast recording of the musical is forthcoming.
Tony winner Rachel Chavkin will direct Lempicka, which features a book, lyrics and original concept by Kreitzer, book and music by Matt Gould, and choreography by Raja Feather Kelly. The cast, recently announced, will also include Amber Iman as Rafaela, followed by ensemble member Ximone Rose in the role July 12–24. They are joined by George Abud as Marinetti, Victor E. Chan as Baron, Natalie Joy Johnson as Suzy Solidor, Jacquelyn Ritz as Baroness, Andrew Samonsky as Tadeusz Lempicki and Jordan Tyson as Kizette.
The pop-infused musical tells the story of young aristocrat-turned-artist Tamara de Lempicka who flees with her husband amid the political turmoil and violence of the Russian Revolution to Paris, where Tamara claws her way to success in exile and meets her new muse, Rafaela.
