The Houses on the Moon Theater Company production of Ian Eaton's SuperHero begins its world-premiere run at The Sheen Center's Frank Shiner Theater April 12. The production will officially open April 14 and run through May 1.
The cast features Yvette Ganier, SJ Hanna, Jeorge Bennett Watson, and Bryce Michael Wood under direction of Warren Adams, who developed the play.
The new work follows a boy whose fantasies of having superpowers are dashed by a neighborhood bully in the aftermath of a tragic event. Drawing upon Eaton's own experiences navigating strict West Indian parents, girls, and Catholic school in 1980s Harlem, this coming-of-age story depicts a boy having to decide the kind of person he wants to be.
“SuperHero is a story about a young boy overcome with insecurity and loss, who fantasizes about having superpowers with the hope that they will solve all of his problems,” Eaton said in an earlier statement. “It's about making choices, and even if bad ones are made, it doesn't have to mean THE END. This show celebrates recognizing our heroes, making brave choices, and making new beginnings."
The creative team also includes set designer Lawrence Moten, sound designer Ronvé O’Daniel, lighting designer Amina Alexander, and dramaturg Reneé Flemings. The production stage manager is Hanako Rodriguez with casting by Eisenberg/Beans Casting.
