Heartland by Gabriel Jason Dean (In Bloom) was set to run through April 10 in 59E59's Theater B, but has cancelled its remaining performances due to breakthrough COVID cases within the company. The show officially opened March 26 after beginning previews March 18.

59E59 announced the cancellation on social media.

The cast featured Mari Vial-Golden (LOVE), Mark Cuddy (Waiting for Godot), and Owais Ahmed (Guards at the Taj) under the direction of Pirronne Yousefzadeh (Kid Prince & Pablo).

Set in Maidan Star, Afghanistan, and Omaha, Nebraska, Heartland follows Dr. Harold Banks, a retired Comparative Literature and Afghan Studies professor and his new and unlikely roommate Nazrullah, an Afghan refugee who shows up on Banks' doorstep. The two have been brought together on an unlikely path by Getee, Banks' adopted daughter.

The production's creative team included scenic designer Meredith Reis (House Plant), costume designer Dina El-Aziz (Selling Kabul), lighting designer Seth Reiser (Somebody's Daughter), and sound designer Kate Marvin (Wives). They were joined by dramaturg Jenni Werner (Airness), cultural consultant Humaira Ghilzai (A Thousand Splendid Suns), intimacy director Rocío Mendez (Merry Wives of Windsor), and production stage manager Veronica Aglow (The Lightning Thief).

Heartland was created in collaboration with Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, New York, where it made its world premiere.
