Irish Repertory Theatre has announced The Letters Series, with casting and performance dates set for Love Letters and Dear Liar. The former will star Tony winners Matthew Broderick and Laura Benanti while the latter will feature Tony nominee Melissa Errico and David Staller.
Jerome Kilty and George Bernard Shaw's Dear Liar will play April 25-30 with A.R. Gurney's Love Letters set to run May 30-June 4 on the Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage. Charlotte Moore (A Child’s Christmas in Wales) will direct the first, while Ciarán O’Reilly (Endgame) will direct the second.
Inspired by correspondence of fact and fiction that’s stood the test of time, The Letters Series explores the thrill of witnessing great relationships unfold and sometimes shape our history in an age of instant communication. Dear Liar and Love Letters allow us to look “behind the curtain” and examine the universal.
Dear Liar adapts correspondence between George Bernard Shaw and celebrated actress Mrs. Patrick Campbell. Kilty explores their passionate and sometimes contentions relationship. Moore directs the work once again, having directed its last production at Irish Repertory Theatre in 1999.
Another two-hander drama, Love Letters was a 1988 Pulitzer Prize finalist for Drama. It follows two friends who exchanges letters over the course of their lives from childhood birthday parties to college to marriage and careers. Through its presentation of two character studies, the work explores how revealing what is written—and what isn't—can be.
