On That Day in Amsterdam

Clarence Coo's On That Day in Amsterdam completes its run at Off-Broadway's 59E59 Theaters September 4, having begun previews July 23 and opened August 11. Primary Stages presents the play in association with Ted Snowdon as part of the company's inaugural season at the Off-Broadway theatre.

Centered on two young men, one a refugee from the Middle East and the other the American child of immigrants, who fall in love, the play follows them as the two spend one romantic day together in Amsterdam after a one-night stand. The dreamers set off across the city to explore art and love as they count down the hours until they must leave the city, and each other.

Starring in the production are Waseem Alzer (Eh Dah? Questions for my Father), Brandon Mendez Homer (Wolf Play), Ahmad Maksoud (The Visitor), Glenn Morizio (Power Book II: Ghost), Elizabeth Ramos (Three Sisters) and Jonathan Raviv (The Band’s Visit).

Directed by Zi Alikhan, the production features movement direction by Jesse Kovarsky (Sing Street), scenic design by Jason Sherwood (Rent: Live), costume design by Lux Haac (Songs About Trains), lighting design by Cha See (soft), sound design by Fan Zhang (At the Wedding), and projection design by Nick Hussong (Skeleton Crew). Jakob Plummer serves as stage manager, Shiku Thuo as assistant stage manager, and Tameishia Peterson as the COVID safety manager. Casting is by Stephanie Yankwitt.

Coo's play was developed through a series of labs, workshops, and presentations, including at the 2019 Sundance Institute Theatre Lab, Vassar’s Powerhouse Summer Season in 2018 with New York Stage and Film, and the New Dramatists' program Jerry A. Tishman Playwrights Creativity Fund.
