The West End revival of Nick Payne's Constellations, which follows a quantum physicist and a beekeeper through the many possible paths a relationship can take, has set a streaming revival, available on demand through May 25 via The Donmar Warehouse. The production ran June 18–September 12, 2021 at the Vaudeville Theatre, and also streamed in October following the engagement.
Each of four different casts of the two-hander was filmed and is available to stream. The pairings include Sheila Atim and Ivanno Jeremiah, Peter Capaldi and Zoë Wanamaker, Omari Douglas and Russell Tovey, and Anna Maxwell Martin and Chris O'Dowd. Each duo was directed by Donmar Artistic Director Michael Longhurst.
Longhurst revived his past production of the work's 2012 London premiere at Royal Court which transferred to the West End the same year. The production subsequently arrived on the Broadway stage in 2014.
The use of four casts in the 2021 West End revival was devised in response to the pandemic with each cast refracting the play. The production won the Olivier Awards for Best Revival and Best Actress, with further nominations given to Douglas for Best Actor in a Play and Longhurst for Best Director.
“More than a pandemic-mitigation model, this multi-cast revival was a celebration of how different identities could reveal our shared humanity,” said Longhurst in a statement.
The production featured designs by Tom Scutt, lighting design by Lee Curran, sound design by David McSeveney, music by Simon Slater, movement direction by Lucy Cullingford, casting by Anna Cooper, and BSL consultancy by Daryl Jackson. Debbie Hannan served as associate director, Sara Aniqah Malik and Robert Awosusi as assistant directors, Laura Ann Price as resident assistant designer, and Sarah Asmail as assistant designer.
